Merritt Island Summer Fishing ReportBy Capt Mike Gulick 8/20/13
Holy Cow it has been hot. So hot I couldn’t even write for the last 2 months. Ok, thats not true. Its really because I have been in and on the water as much as possible because the fishing is hotter than the air temperature.
Lets start a little way off Merritt Island, well, way off. The scalloping on the gulf coast has been better this year that the last 2 years. We spent the first week of July in Crystal River and got our limit (2 gallons per person, 10 Gallons per boat) in under 2 hours for 5 days straight. Some friends are there as I write this and are still getting their limits. The season is open until September 24th.
Ok back to The Island. The flats have been productive early in the mornings for Redfish and Trout. When the air and water temps begin to climb, focus your efforts on slightly deeper water. We have been finding Redfish in water 3-5 feet deep.
The Tarpon bite has been excellent both inshore and out of the port. The Tarpon in the river have been anywhere from 10-40 lbs. Outside of the port they are common over 100 lbs. In the river, live mullet has been the bait of choice.
Black Drum are also schooling in the river. Live or dead shrimp will usually do the trick for them.
The fishing is absolutely on FIRE right now. If you’re interested in a trip, give me a call. Enjoy the rest of summer, cooler weather is right around the corner.
